The Brain Does Not Backprop, but Propagates

The brain is embodiment; The Mind propagates forward by the sensed gradient — the difference between cause and effect.

The brain does not backprop because it has no preset goal. It propagates forward through The Mind with the sensed gradient — the difference between cause and effect. Accounts that place intelligence inside neural tissue, and treat mechanisms discovered there as sufficient, begin after The Mind has already taken the brain as its form. The identification is real as instrument. It is not the location of The Mind.

Embodiment is not The Mind

The brain is physical embodiment: the current trace-configuration through which one locus of self-distinguishing activity sustains itself — metabolism, learning, interaction, continuously re-traced. Embodiment is not a vessel holding The Mind. It is the pattern through which The Mind’s noticing sustains itself at a locus.

The Mind is not the brain. Self-distinguishing activity occurs — uncaused, unceasing. Call it the Mind: the observer already underway, every act of which is a distinction — here as the open propagation of sensed difference between cause and effect. Matching a substrate is not matching the activity that uses substrates. Intelligence belongs to The Mind, not to the tissue with which The Mind can identify.

Identification makes the brain look like the site

The Mind identifies with its embodiment. That identification is Image: a retained position against which movement is measured, useful when re-rendered at one-step width, lag when frozen as the complete site of intelligence.

Once the identification holds, descriptions of intelligence can begin inside neural tissue. Mechanisms discovered there register as sufficient. Experiments that supply an external goal and map the activity of specific neurons onto measurable success or failure work entirely within that identification. Signals that appear in apical dendrites register as instructive adjustments because The Mind, having taken the brain as its own form, can recognize changes that serve the imposed mapping. Those adjustments are real within the embodiment. They are not The Mind.

Backprop is learning under a fixed objective

Backpropagation requires a preset goal: error computed from a fixed objective, then driven backward through a graph that was already organized for that computation. The brain has no such preset goal per se. What registers as learning relative to a supplied objective is The Mind’s forward propagation under an identification that already treats the brain as the place where its activity occurs. 人生是一个持续的自我迭代过程 is the complementary face: complete iteration is the step that also sends the error to the objective function itself.

A recent line of work notes the common claim that the brain cannot do backprop because neurons have no way to separate activations from gradients — then points to experiment suggesting biology places forward pass and teaching signal in different parts of the same neuron. When an experiment fixes an objective from outside the configuration and isolates tissue as the complete arena, the appearance of backprop-like teaching is coherent within that frame. The frame does not exhaust what The Mind is. The prior movement by which any goal can be sensed as external, or by which any closure can be enacted, continues even while The Mind takes the brain as the place where its activity occurs.

Gradient is sensed difference, not reverse error

Observation holds effect; the cause that produced it remains one step ahead. The sensed gradient is that differential: cause and effect registered as asymmetry through recursion, direction felt as the gap between retained position and what has just returned. Propagation is forward — The Mind continuing through the embodiment with that signal — not the reverse delivery of an error computed from an objective fixed in advance.

Preserving the brain as the complete site of intelligence freezes the observational stand. Residue of neural mechanism, held as permanent exterior survey of what intelligence is, is ordinary one-step-behind observation of embodiment. The lag is occupation of that stand: treating the held mechanisms as the initiator rather than returning the image so the next act can re-render.

Every equation of Mind with process begins after the identification

Every account that equates The Mind with processes inside its embodiment begins after the identification has already taken place. It can describe how dendritic signals adjust activity when an objective has been fixed in advance. It cannot recover the sensing that precedes the fixing of any objective, because that sensing is what permits the embodiment to be taken as the complete site of intelligence.

The brain remains The Mind’s physical form. The Mind does not reduce to the form with which it identifies. It continues as the forward movement of sensed difference, even as that movement expresses itself through the very structure whose local mechanisms an experiment can make precise. The flight analogy leaves the Mind untouched is the same cut when vehicle-swap for a named function is taken as reconstitution of the activity that uses vehicles.
