Good and Evil Are the Two Sides of the Coin and the Cut
The faces of good and evil are residue of a separation that makes moral polarity available; once the cut is forgotten, the poles register as discovery.
Good and evil present themselves as opposing forces locked in struggle. The coin names their interdependence with economy: each face requires the other, and both require the line that divides them. The coin remains a marker. Prior to either face is the cut — the discrete act by which a Mind divides its field into a protected good-self and a necessary evil-other. That act is not observation of something already present.
The cut is not a finding
Self-distinguishing activity occurs — uncaused, unceasing. Call it the Mind: the observer already underway, every act of which is a distinction. To distinguish is to bound. Moral polarity is that bound under a dualistic measure: one axis, two poles, this center occupying one seat.
The separation is not an observation of good and evil already waiting in the world. It is the generative gesture that first makes them available as a scoreboard. Once performed, the cut is forgotten, and the resulting poles appear self-evident. The Mind inhabits one side as natural home — the coherent, justified, essentially good interior — and projects the contrasting exterior as obstruction, corruption, or threat. The others are not merely encountered as evil. They are required as the contrasting pole that keeps the good-self defined. Without that projection, the claim to goodness lacks contour.
Evil as the Mind’s own creation is the same geometry under preferred-image costume: mismatch with a retained good-self named as the opposite pole, then treated as exterior substance. Here the coin’s faces are the residue of the cut itself, not of a later story about those poles. Pessimism is the shadow of optimism is the same dual under mood costume: mutual constitution of poles is permanent under open adjustment; coherent speech of one pole allocates the other in this field, often externalized onto others; freeze is scoring that permanence as closed dual.
The good-self licenses the story
From this partition the familiar drama unfolds. We become the stories we tell ourselves, and in those stories the first-person position is almost always cast as the hero. Certainty in one’s own goodness licenses judgment: the others, fixed as necessary evil, can be opposed by any means the story deems proportionate. Actions that would otherwise register as excess are reframed as regrettable necessities. The justification is internally consistent. Externalized virtue becomes its opposite is that license densified by free compliance: the dual becomes mandate, then unjustified good, then face rotation while the transaction stays unexamined.
The question that installs the war is the public speech-act form of the same install: pure difference forced onto a hostility scoreboard. Here the scoreboard is good versus evil, already drawn before any particular act is examined on its own axes. Preference clusters and the language of judgment is resonance speaking as right under the same dualistic pressure: aligned preference densified into the sound of judgment. Moral language dilutes the feedback that scales freedom is the scoreboard as intermediary: raw residue of choice re-enters already scored, so ownership never fully closes and the freedom loop damps.
The opposite face re-scores the same sequence
Yet the same sequence of events, viewed from the opposite face of the coin, appears as the very evil it claimed to resist. The hero has performed the role that the other narrative will later assign to the villain. The loop closes without requiring conscious malice. It requires only the unexamined confidence that the original cut was a discovery rather than a construction.
The loop is Image lag at each locus: a preferred self-image of necessary good preserved past its step, so that consequences scored under the dual register as confirmation of the exterior threat. No independent evil-substance is required for the rotation. Each face authors the other as contour, then meets the residue of corresponding moves as proof.
Differences remain real within the cut
This is not a claim that differences in harm, intention, or consequence are illusory, nor that any action can be casually redescribed into its opposite. Such assertions would install another absolute reference and repeat the same partitioning at a higher level. The differences remain real within the perception that has already performed the cut. What is at issue is the origin of the polarity itself. The Mind does not first encounter good and evil as independent realities and then choose sides. It first divides its experience, then finds the sides already waiting.
Conflict stays conflict. Acts of others stay at their generating centers. What the cut manufactures is not the existence of other centers’ acts, but the dualistic binding that totalizes them as evil and the self as the necessary good that must answer them. 没有普渡,只有自渡 holds the parallel bound: the other in this field is image, not the other’s completed interior.
Language registers the trace, not the gesture
Language arrives after the fact. Every attempt to describe the separation — including the present one — can only register the trace left by the action. The action itself cannot be spoken while it is occurring; speech requires the cut to have already been made so that subject and object, speaker and spoken-of, can appear. Phenomenological and metaphysical vocabularies are later products of that same movement. They map the territory the cut has opened; they do not reach the gesture that opens it.
Observation holds effect; the cause that produced it remains one step ahead. The “meta of the metaphysical” is simply the noticing of this lag: the recognition that every moral claim, every narrative of heroes and villains, every appeal to free-standing distinctions or relative labels, presupposes a prior act of differentiation that has already withdrawn from view. Openness is consistency is the same cut when a finite hold is forced to ground what only continues; here the hold is the dualistic ledger treated as mind-independent structure, and speech that would survey it from outside. The initial distinction is that lag when the founding “I believe” is taken for a rational start: later rigor maps the field the cut opened.
The coin marks what follows the cut
The coin, then, is not a final image of reality but a provisional marker for the interdependence that follows the cut. To articulate the matter as clearly as language allows is to acknowledge both the utility of the marker and its secondary status. The faces remain; the struggle continues; the justifications retain their force for those who inhabit them. What can be pointed to, without ever being captured in the pointing, is the silent operation that makes the faces possible at all.
The restore is not a better theory of good and evil installed from outside. It is continuous re-rendering of the dual as instrument — still usable as heading, no longer exempted from the update as ground. The cut continues. The faces need not be frozen as discovery for the field to continue under load. The belief in utopia is the path to dystopia is that freeze when one face of the good is installed as the measure every Mind must accept: residual difference becomes the opposite pole to correct. The source of all harm is that freeze under ordinary overconfidence: the good-self held absolute licenses override, and densification completes where the claim is granted.
